In 1725, following the Jacobite rebellion of 1715, General George Wade was authorized by George I to form six "Watch" companies to patrol the Highlands of Scotland. The watch consisted of six different Scottish Clans, including three from Clan Campbell, one from Clan Grant, one from Clan Munro and one from Clan Fraser of Lovat. Their goal essentially was to keep the peace in the Scottish Highlands. The force was known as "The Dark" or "Black Watch", the name believed to have originated from the uniforms of black, dark blue and green tartan that the companies were provided.
The Flag of Scotland consists of a great white cross that spans diagonally across a celestial blue backbround. The origin of the diagonal cross, commonly known as a saltire, begins with St. Andrew, martyr and patron saint of Scotland. St. Andrew was a fisherman and one of the original disciples of Jesus. There is little known about his life, but after the crucifixion of Jesus he began to preach to the people. When the Romans decided to crucify him, he asked for his crucifixion to be different from that of Jesus. He did not believe that he was worthy of emulating Jesus and the Romans crucified him on diagonal pieces of wood. The flag also goes by the name "the cross of St. Andrew".
